Travel Writing course begins again

Exciting to be teaching my Travel Writing course again this October. Why? Because it is at a time when many are questioning mass tourism and its affect on cities and countries

We look at if you enjoy travelling, how to write about your journeys and experience. It might be a career choice and for existing ‘content creators’ or those wishing to be one. So many of use just want to tell and show family and friends about places visited.

The skills needed to be more creative in writing and reporting about places you visit are unique to travel writing. There are distinct format to follow and use. It is easier than general creative writing because there is a structure and a subject or topic that defines what is written. there is also often if writing a blog or a newspaper or social media piece a word count- so you have to be concise and focussed.

We even do a session on using your mobile to film video! This is central today for anyone wanting to add visual images- whether video or stills to emphasise and make your piece more appealing to your reader. Using a selfie stick or a hand-held device for your mobile allows you as a solo traveller to make videos and then learn how to upload them and even edit them. As a pioneer videojournalist, who also teaches mobile journalism, I can teach the vital skills and give lots of tips on this.

I think we all have a passion for travel, for seeing places and experiencing different cultures. If we didn’t travel, life would be quite dull and insular. But as a travel writer you can be enjoyed by those ‘armchair travellers’ who cannot make journeys but still want to know about the world.
